The students at Renton High School are not having enough time to eat their lunches. Not only is the lunch time only 30 minutes, but there is now also only one lunch for the entire school here at Renton.

From the lunch time being so short with about 1,400 students all having lunch at the same time, it is causing students to be tardy to their classes after lunch because the cafeteria and all the fast food places are packed–which students cannot help. Students at Renton High School are so desperate to have a longer period of time to eat their lunches, that lately the fire alarm has been getting pulled once or even sometimes twice a week by a student that is wanting to extend the lunch hour. Some of the students at RHS have speculated that is is basically an unconventional cry for help that none of the administrators are noticing.

Not only is it affecting the students here at the school, but it also affecting the the teachers as well. Recently, one of the math teachers was seen by a student coming from the copy room with stacks of papers during lunch. Teachers are expected to take the same amount of lunch time as the students, which is a 30 minute lunch and be back to their classrooms by the time the end of lunch bell for the students. So, it is either they take time out of their lunch to prepare for the next class period, or they take time out of the period before lunch that you have a class to teach just to have class ready to go as soon as lunch is over and the students are walking in the door.

30 minutes is not enough time to serve about 1,400 students food. Students are not asking for an hour long lunch, but the common request that has been circulating is to add 15 minutes to the 30 minutes that they have now, which has the potential to make a big difference. One could speculate that the large numbers of tardies would decrease, teachers could get their full 30 minutes of lunch, students could actually finish eating their lunches, and no more fire alarms would be going off–which leads to no more $300 fine from the fire alarm being pulled.
